For the last decade or so, it seems like the shortstop position is always the go-to conversation piece when discussing position scarcity. The new wave of shortstops have brought some star power to the position, but there is still more value at the middle infield position than years past. There is still a drop-off after the top 5, but solid veterans lie below this top 15 including Marcus Semien, Zack Cozart, and Marwin Gonzalez. The industry is also touting guys like Ketel Marte and Amed Rosario as potential late round steals. We’ll dig a little deeper into the rankings in later updates.

Stock Up:

Elvis Andrus

Elvis Andrus has been the same consistent guy for years and continuously overlooked in fantasy drafts because he’s just solid. Nothing spectacular. Not going to give you the counting stats that are so sexy with the studs. Then suddenly, like seemingly the rest of the league, Andrus hit 12 more homers than his career high of 8 at 28 years old. Is it possible for him to hit 20 again? Probably not. He’s been hovering around the .300 mark in AVG for the last couple of years and the projections don’t necessarily call for that either. Andrus should still be that solid contributor across the board, just don’t expect anyone to overlook him this year. Do not pay for 2017 numbers.

Stock Down:

Trevor Story

Phillies vs. Rockies
Michael Reaves, The Denver Post

Trevor Story looked like a no-brainer coming into 2017 as he hit 27 homers with a .272 average and 8 % walk rate in only 97 games the previous season. Add in the Coors element and his price skyrocketed. In ‘17, he hit fewer home runs in 48 more games. Story’s isolated power dropped from .296 to .219 in 2017, which explains the drop in HR rate. The most disturbing element, however, was his .239 average. His batted ball profile looks very similar, so maybe there is some hope here after all. The truth is shortstop is not the afterthought it used to be after the stars. He is still only 25 and had a much better 2nd half after his slow start last season. It should be noted that Story is a lefty masher, sporting a 1.034 OPS in ‘17 against southpaws, so keep that in mind for DFS or daily leagues.
