Move over Dallas Cowboys! Despite the current state of divisiveness in American politics, there still are rare occasions in which the people and their respective representatives can get behind a common cause. On Tuesday morning, a bill was rushed through the House and Senate to declare the Jacksonville Jaguars, “America’s Team”, ahead of Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the widely loathed New England Patriots.
“Our beloved Jaguars embody everything that the country stands for. It only makes sense”, said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The bill was co-sponsored by the two Florida senators Bill Nelson (D) and Marco Rubio (R). Despite his long-time friendship with Patriots owner Bob Kraft, President Trump signed the bill and released an official statement: “Listen, I love Bob Kraft, and you know, he’s a good friend of mine. I’ve known him a very long time. The longest. I love Belichick too. Every time I go to a game, Bill comes up to me and gives me a big hug and he’s got the hoodie on you know? This was a very tough decision this morning, believe me, but I had to do it. You look at Jacksonville and you look into their situation, it’s unbelievable, they have the best ratings. I had no choice”.
“We won’t let the American people down”, responded quarterback Blake Bortles after receiving the news.
